The city of Colombo covers an area of 37km2 and the pipe network is almost 1000km long. Almost 95% of the city is connected to the pipe network, but the problems are many and varied: water pressure is very low, the water supply is not continuous and water losses, at around 49%, are very high, with only an estimated 39% due to technical losses. In addition, the pipe network is over 50 years old over a length of about 700 km, and in the city centre it is even partly over 100 years old.
Project objectives:
- To increase access to water supply (the availability of water supply) and improve its efficiency.
- To reduce water losses (NRW) from 49% to 18% by 2020.
- Introduce long-term, sustainable processes to reduce water losses.
- Building institutional, operational and management capacity at the client's site.
